Every June 20, World Refugee Day invites us to honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of refugees around the globe. This year, Della Lamb marked the day with three meaningful events across Kansas City—each distinct in purpose, but united in creating spaces of welcome, education, and joy.
Together, these events demonstrated what community-centered refugee support can look like at its best.
In partnership with Jacob’s Well Church, Della Lamb hosted an evening designed to deepen understanding of the refugee experience and foster meaningful dialogue.
Guests heard from our Executive Director, who provided context on global displacement and what it means for Kansas City. A Della Lamb team member, who experienced resettlement firsthand, shared her own story—offering an authentic and heartfelt look into the journey newcomers take toward rebuilding home.
The night also featured a special performance by a local mariachi band, including a musician we had the privilege of resettling from Venezuela. Jacob’s Well extended extraordinary hospitality by preparing culturally relevant food and snacks in collaboration with families we serve.
Through storytelling, culture, and shared meals, this gathering invited attendees to listen with empathy and learn with openness.
Meanwhile, across the city, we partnered with El Torreon KC to host Keys for a Cause, a pop-up piano bar that brought a joyful twist to World Refugee Day.
Guests enjoyed dueling pianos, energetic sing-alongs, and an atmosphere full of good humor and community spirit. The event offered an accessible, celebratory way for supporters to engage with Della Lamb’s mission—showing that solidarity can be joyful, creative, and fun.
Thanks to our performers, partners, and attendees, the evening was not only lively but also impactful, helping raise awareness and support for refugees rebuilding their lives in Kansas City.
Earlier that week, we also welcomed our refugee and immigrant clients for a dedicated celebration centered on belonging and connection.
Our Health & Wellness and Employment teams shared resources, updates, and encouragement—equipping families with practical support for their journeys ahead. Clients had space to build relationships, exchange experiences, and feel celebrated by a community that sees and values them.
Volunteers ensured a warm, welcoming atmosphere by preparing food, assisting families, and entertaining children so parents could fully participate. The room was filled with joy, conversation, laughter, and cultural pride—reflecting exactly what World Refugee Day is meant to honor.
From reflective learning, to joyful celebration, to community-building among families, World Refugee Day 2025 showcased the many ways Kansas City shows up for refugees.
