Community Spotlight: Displaced Persons Worldwide
Today, we walk alongside people displaced around the world.
Today, more than 120 million people have been forced from their homes by war, persecution, violence, or disaster. Behind every number is a story—a parent carrying a child to safety, a student leaving behind friends and school, a grandparent wondering if they will ever return home, or a family beginning again in an unfamiliar place.
While displacement is one of the defining humanitarian challenges of our time, it does not define the people who experience it. Every displaced person bears the image of God and carries hopes, gifts, and dreams for the future. As we begin this pilgrimage together, we remember that God created every person for belonging.
Scripture: Genesis 1:27 – “So God created mankind in his own image… male and female he created them.”
Reflection
Every pilgrimage changes the way we see the world.
Today, we begin by seeing people as God sees them.
Before there were nations, borders, languages, or cultures, there was creation. In the opening pages of Scripture, God declares every human life to be made in His image. That truth is the foundation of every relationship we are called to build and every act of welcome we are invited to extend.
Displacement was never part of God’s original design. Humanity was created for communion – with God, with one another, and with creation itself. Home was more than a place; it was the experience of belonging in the presence of God.
Yet the image of God remains undiminished in every person we encounter. Refugees fleeing conflict, immigrants seeking opportunity, lifelong residents of our neighborhoods, and people whose stories are very different from our own all carry the same sacred dignity.
We are invited to resist the temptation to see people as labels or categories. Instead, we learn to see neighbors. We learn to see beloved creations of God.
The journey toward communities of welcome begins with transformed vision.
Pilgrim’s Prayer
Thank You for creating every person in Your image and calling Your creation good. Forgive us for the times we have allowed fear, assumptions, or indifference to shape the way we see others. Open our eyes to recognize Your image in every person we encounter. As we begin this pilgrimage, deepen our love for You and teach us to become people who reflect Your compassion, mercy, and hospitality. Amen.
