Community Spotlight: Sudanese Refugees
Today, we walk alongside Sudanese refugees.
Since conflict erupted in Sudan in 2023, millions have been forced to flee their homes, creating one of the world’s largest displacement crises. Families have sought safety while leaving behind homes, livelihoods, and loved ones. Yet Sudanese communities are also marked by resilience, deep faith, and a commitment to family and community. As they rebuild their lives, they continue to enrich the communities they now call home.
Today, we pray for peace in Sudan and for all who continue their journey toward safety and belonging.
Scripture: Deuteronomy 10:17–19 – “For the Lord your God… loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.”
Reflection
God often teaches through remembrance.
Israel knew what it meant to live as strangers in a foreign land. Rather than allowing those memories to fade, God called His people to let them shape the way they treated others.
He declared:
“The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” (Leviticus 19:33–34)
This is more than a command to show kindness. It is an invitation to extend dignity, belonging, and love. God reminds His people that their own experience of vulnerability should become the foundation of their compassion.
Many Sudanese families know what it means to leave home because violence has made it unsafe. Their stories remind us that displacement is not merely a global issue – it is a deeply human experience.
As followers of Christ, we are called to remember God’s grace in our own lives and allow that remembrance to shape the way we welcome others. Compassion grows when memory becomes love in action.
Pilgrim’s Prayer
God of compassion, thank You for remembering Your people and never abandoning them. Help us remember Your grace so that we may respond to others with humility, mercy, and love. Today we pray for the people of Sudan and for all who have been forced to flee violence. Bring peace where there is conflict, comfort where there is grief, and hope where there is uncertainty. Teach us to welcome others as You have welcomed us, treating every person with dignity and love. Amen.
