Walk for Welcome Day 6

Day 6

The Gift of Belonging

Community Spotlight: Afghan Families

Today, we walk alongside Afghan families.

For decades, conflict and instability have displaced millions of Afghans. Many families have endured repeated upheaval, and in recent years thousands have begun new lives in communities across the United States. They arrive carrying stories of courage, sacrifice, and hope while working to build a future for their children.

Afghan families enrich our communities through their resilience, hospitality, strong family traditions, and desire to contribute. Today, we pray for their continued journey toward safety, belonging, and opportunity.

Scripture: Ruth 2:8-9 “Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me…I have told the men not to lay a hand on you.”

Reflection

The story of Ruth reminds us that welcome begins with seeing someone – and is fulfilled by helping them belong.

As a widow and a foreigner, Ruth had every reason to feel invisible. Yet Boaz noticed her, protected her, invited her to remain, and treated her with dignity. His kindness was not an act of charity alone; it was an invitation into community.

Through that welcome, Ruth’s story became part of God’s greater story. She became the great-grandmother of King David and, generations later, part of the family line of Jesus.

We rarely know what God may accomplish through a simple act of welcome.

Every person carries gifts, experiences, and a purpose known by God. When we create spaces of belonging, we make room for those gifts to flourish—for the blessing of individuals, families, and entire communities.

Hospitality is more than opening a door.

It is opening our lives.

Pilgrim’s Prayer

God of welcome, thank You for seeing every person and inviting each of us into Your family. Today we pray for Afghan families and for all who are beginning again in unfamiliar places. Surround them with people who offer friendship, encouragement, and opportunities to flourish.

Teach us to move beyond acts of kindness toward lives of genuine hospitality. May our homes, churches, and communities become places where strangers become neighbors, neighbors become friends, and every person knows they belong. Amen.

Pilgrim’s Blessing

May the God who welcomed Ruth into His story teach you to welcome others with generosity and grace. May your table become wider, your heart more open, and your life a place where others discover the joy of belonging.
