Community Spotlight: Families Seeking Asylum
Today, we walk alongside families seeking asylum.
Around the world, many people flee their homes because of persecution, violence, or credible threats to their lives. They leave not because they seek a different life, but because they seek safety. Their journey is often marked by uncertainty, long periods of waiting, and the hope that one day they will live without fear. Related to US immigration law, the primary difference between refugees and asylum seekers is that refugees apply for protection from outside the United States before arriving while asylum seekers request protection at a US port of entry or inside the United States.
Today, we pray for families seeking asylum and for communities that offer compassion, justice, and hope along their journey.
Scripture: Matthew 2:14-15 – “So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod.”
Reflection
Soon after Jesus was born, His family fled their home.
Warned of Herod’s violence, Joseph took Mary and Jesus to Egypt in the middle of the night. The Son of God began His earthly life not in comfort or security, but as a child whose family sought refuge in a foreign land.
This story reminds us that God does not watch human suffering from a distance. In Jesus, He entered it. Christ understands the fear of leaving home, the uncertainty of an unfamiliar place, and the vulnerability of depending on the kindness of others.
Years later, Jesus would tell His followers: “I was a stranger and you invited me in.” (Matthew 25:35)
With these words, Jesus forever connected our love for Him with our love for others. When we welcome the stranger, extend compassion to those seeking safety, and walk alongside those who are displaced, we reflect the heart of Christ Himself.
Following Jesus means more than admiring His compassion. It means embodying it.
Pilgrim’s Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for entering our world and sharing in the struggles of humanity. Thank You for walking the path of vulnerability and reminding us that no one is beyond Your love. Today we pray for families seeking asylum and for all who have fled persecution or violence. Protect them, strengthen them, and surround them with people who reflect Your compassion. Teach us to recognize Your presence in those who are suffering and to welcome others with the same grace You have shown us. Amen.

May Christ, who sought refuge as a child and welcomed every person with grace, walk beside you each day. May His compassion shape your heart, His humility guide your steps, and His love inspire you to welcome the stranger as you would welcome Him.
