An Artist | A Refugee | A Kansas Citian

“Everything is different here. The city, language, light, water, everything. And the people… the people are very important. Everybody has a smile, say good day, say I’m sorry. It’s a different culture than in my country. Yes, very friendly.”

Naseer Al-Zuhairi

Mr. Naseer Al Zuhairi kindly welcomed us into his home in March to catch up and chat about his resettlement process. When we first met and resettled Naseer in September, we learned that he was an artist. While he hasn’t been able to do much recently due to lack of supplies, he did treat us to an impromptu art show of pieces he brought with him. His collection ranges from paintings to pressed copper stamps to sculpture. Though his path has been difficult, his artwork is filled with hope, vibrance and beautiful colors.

When he was forced to flee his home in 2005, Naseer established himself in urban areas in other countries rather than a refugee camp, which is quite common. He initially relocated to Turkey for 5 years before moving to Yemen where he was able to resume his artwork. After a decade in Yemen, the UN approved his refugee status and placed him in KC with his son, who was also a refugee and placed here 3 years ago.

Naseer is an incredibly kind man with a contagious smile. He enjoys watching European soccer, cooking and is studying for his driver’s test. He hasn’t been to the Nelson Atkins Museum yet, but we are arranging to take him soon! Although he left most of his art and life behind, Naseer is beyond grateful to be in Kansas City. And we’re lucky to have him.
