Celebrating the Week of the Young Child 2024

The Importance of Early Education and Childcare Access

The Week of the Young Child 2024

April 6th begins the Week of the Young Child, and we at Della Lamb believe it’s crucial to shine a light on the critical role that high-quality early education plays in breaking the cycle of poverty and providing a pathway to success for children from low-income families.

The Importance of Early Education:

Study after study has shown that quality early education is a game-changer for children, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds. Research from organizations like the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) and the Heckman Equation highlights the long-term benefits of investing in early childhood education, including increased academic achievement, higher graduation rates, and improved economic outcomes later in life.

For families facing financial hardships, access to affordable, high-quality childcare can be a lifeline. However, in the more impoverished areas of Kansas City and many other communities across the country, childcare deserts are a harsh reality. Parents are left with few options for childcare, forcing them to make difficult choices between work, education, and caregiving responsibilities. In fact, research shows that many families in poverty-dense areas struggle to find suitable childcare options. You can visualize the impact of childcare deserts in relation to poverty levels in our community by exploring this link: Childcare Deserts Map.

Moreover, getting children into formal education opportunities before kindergarten is crucial for their long-term success. Even in households with two parents or a caregiver at home, preparing for elementary school, particularly for English language learners, is paramount in the early years of life. Early education programs play a vital role in providing children with the foundational skills they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally as they progress through school.

Della Lamb’s Commitment to Breaking Barriers:

At Della Lamb, we are on a mission to change the narrative for low-income families by providing access to exceptional early education and childcare services. Our Early Education Program serves as a source of support and opportunity for families in need, offering a safe, nurturing environment where children can thrive and grow.

Despite facing challenges like limited resources, the national teacher shortage, and a staggering waitlist that once reached 200 children, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing high-quality education while also ensuring our dedicated teachers receive a living and dignified wage. Our approach is not just about teaching ABCs and 123s; it’s about breaking down barriers and empowering families to build brighter futures for themselves and their children.

Our Vision for the Future:

As we celebrate the Week of the Young Child, we’re not only reflecting on the incredible work we’ve done but also looking forward to the future. At Della Lamb’s Early Education Program, our vision is clear: we want to serve more children, attract more qualified and passionate teachers, open more classrooms, and expand our impact within the community.

However, we can’t achieve this vision alone. We need the support of our community to make it a reality. By coming together, we can ensure that every child in our area has access to high-quality early education that sets them on the path to success. Whether it’s through volunteering, spreading the word about our program, or making a donation, every contribution makes a difference in the lives of children and families in need.

Join us in building a brighter future for our community. Together, we can make a lasting impact and create opportunities for growth and learning for generations to come. Let’s work hand in hand to serve more children, attract passionate teachers, and open more doors to education. Together, we can make this vision a reality.

Did You Know...

20% More Likely

Children who attend preschool are 20% more likely to graduate high school and twice as likely to attend college.

Decrease by 70%

Early education can decrease the likelihood of future criminal behavior by up to 70%.

Less than 50%

A study found that less than half of children from low-income families are ready for school at age 5, while 75% of children from middle- to upper-income families are ready for school at age 5.

Less likely

Latinx children, the nation’s fastest-growing demographic among three- and four-year-olds, are less likely to enroll in preschool, many due to the sheer lack of availability and affordability.

Greater Opportunity Gaps

Many children of color and those from low-income households are more likely to receive early childhood education of lower quality compared to their white and higher-income counterparts perpetuating a cycle of educational inequity and widening opportunity gaps from an early age.
